Primary School Programme 2006
(1st and 2nd class pupils)

How High Is Up? by Brendan Murray

This is a beautifully written and positive reflection on time and death. It tells a story of Little Star and her quest to stop time so as to hold on to her beloved guardian who is old and ill, the gardener Ong Gia. With the assistance of The Bird Who Has No Wings she embarks on a courageous journey to question three magicians of the elements. On the way she learns that time, nature and life itself, answer to a rhythm that includes winter and spring, birth and death, joy and sadness, trust and doubt, youth and age. At the end Little Star is alone but no longer afraid. The play confronts the necessity of death in the world of a constant renewal and celebrates the cycle of life through magic, music and movement.

Through the fictional story of Little Star we examine:

  • What it means for something or someone to end
  • The need to remember
  • Change as a natural part of life
