The Drama of Art

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and TEAM Educational Theatre Company invite you to participate in an exciting and innovative new educational programme exploring the current exhibition, Francis Bacon: A Terrible Beauty, through visual arts and drama integrated learning strategies.

Our aim is to challenge the traditional art museum visit, by providing a more engaging experience for young people. Over the course of 2 hours students will explore the life and art of Francis Bacon through his studio and work, followed by an experiential drama workshop.

The programme offers two options:

A. Students travel to The Hugh Lane Gallery where they will be met by an artist who will take them on an exploration of the exhibition, discussing one of two themes as mentioned below. This tour is designed to be dialogic and interactive, rather than passive. The themes explored will be further examined through a drama workshop facilitated by a TEAM educational drama specialist. This dual-methodology will provide students with an active and experiential fine arts learning opportunity, which supports the National Curriculum. We can facilitate groups of 20 students maximum per session, with the possibility of running 2 sessions simultaneously.

Cost:  €150 per group

 B. Hugh Lane and TEAM facilitators will travel to the participating school to deliver the workshops as described in Option A. Note: students will be viewing reproductions of artworks and installation shots of the exhibition, rather than experiencing the studio and work first hand.

In-school set up requirements:
• AV equipment including: laptop, screen and digital projector.
• Large, open space suitable for drama workshop.

Cost: €200 per group

Teachers may choose from the following two themes:

Memory:  an exploration of the persona of the artist and their legacy; investigating personal experience, memento and questioning what marks one chooses to leave behind.

Space & Identity:  through the physical exploration of the exhibition (including Bacon’s studio and paintings) students will examine ideas regarding personal space and how one identifies and places oneself within a space.

Teachers may take into consideration which theme might appropriately link with current study and student interest. Relevant subjects include: Art, Drama, CSPE, English and Religion. It is also possible to leave the theme choice open, allowing the facilitator and the group to decide on the day, giving students ownership over their learning process.
